It often is, and it can help a great deal with things like anxiety, low mood and feeling disconnected. But shamanic work needs a reasonable degree of mental robustness, so for some conditions it is not the right time. If you have any mental health issues, current or in the past, that might affect your ability to journey safely, please talk to us before booking.
Can shamanic work help with mental health? #
Yes, often. It can be of great benefit with issues such as anxiety, depression, low self-esteem and a sense of disconnection. It is not a substitute for medical or psychotherapeutic care when those are needed, but it can sit well alongside other therapies.
When is it not the right time? #
When a condition affects your groundingGrounding. Returning fully into the body and physical reality; the bedrock of safe practice, and how every journey ends. More about this or your hold on reality. Like meditation and other similar practices, shamanic work can be contra-indicated with mental health issues such as psychosis, mania, severe depression or dissociative disorders. Our main concern is if someone is having, or has recently had, suicidal thoughts or psychotic episodes. With some conditions, a couple of years of stability may still be too short for journeying to be safe.
What should I do if I am not sure? #
Contact us before booking, and tell us about it. Any discussion is treated confidentially. We also read the booking forms carefully, and occasionally, when we feel the course is not right for someone at that time, we decline the booking and refund it.
