No. You do not need your own drum: you can journey to a recording of shamanic drumming, and our drumming tracks are a free download. A blindfold, headphones, and a pen and paper for afterwards are all that most people need.
Do I need my own drum? #
No. You can journey to a recording of shamanic drumming, played through speakers or headphones. We have two drumming tracks of our own, played by Paul Francis, one 10 minutes long and one 15 minutes, each with a call-backCall-back. The change in the drumbeat that signals the return at the end of a journey: back through the route you came, into the physical body, grounded. More about this at the end. They are free to download from the Resources page of our website.
What else helps? #
A blindfold, headphones and somewhere you will not be disturbed. “Ideally, put headphones on to cut out background noise. Blindfolds really help with journeying too.”1 It also helps to make sure the door is locked, and to have a pen and paper ready to note down your journey when you come back.
Does the kind of drumming matter? #
It can, so it is worth experimenting. Recordings come in different lengths, usually from ten to thirty minutes, and in different styles. Besides single drums there are recordings with “double drums, drums with rattles, just rattles, didgeridoos, singing bowls, and even drums with rock-grinding!” Each brings a different flavour, so try a few and see what works for you.2
