What are the Signal groups, and do I have to use Signal?

The Signal groups are our discussion groups, run on the Signal messaging app, where students share their experiences and ask the tutors questions. They are optional, but we strongly advise joining them. If you join, we ask you to use your full name.

What are the Signal groups for? #

For discussion, questions and support. Each course has its own group. This is where the tutors answer students’ questions; we are not able to offer one-to-one mentoring. When a course’s group comes to an end it is closed to new posts, but the General Discussion group stays open.

Do I have to use Signal? #

No, the groups are optional. You can do the courses without them, through the recordings and the website. That said, we strongly advise joining them if you want to get the most from the course. Students that do join them usually get a huge amount from them.

How do I join a Signal group? #

The Signal group for a course is usually set up a week or two before the course starts (you will be notified if you are enrolled). Once the group is open, sign in to the website and go to “My Groups” (not “My Courses”). Open your course’s group, and you will find the link to its Signal group in the pinned post at the top.

Why do you ask for my full name for Signal? #

It is one of our guidelines for the groups. Ideally use your full name, or at the very least your first name and the initial of your surname, such as “Sam B”. Initials alone, or a first name alone, are not enough. You change your name inside the Signal app itself. If a name does not meet this, we will remind you, and if it is not changed we will remove you from the group until it is.

Can I share a Signal group’s link with a friend? #

No. The groups are only for students on that course, so please do not pass on their links.
